How to Register for the 11+ Entrance Exam

Registering your child for the 11+ exam is essential if you’re considering grammar school education. Each region or school consortium may have slightly different procedures, so always consult your local education authority or the official school websites for full details.
Missing the registration deadline can mean your child won't be able to sit the exam — ensure you have marked the date and complete your application well in advance.
If your child requires special accommodations (such as extra time), these must be requested during the registration process. Registering early ensures there’s plenty of time to gather any documentation and make appropriate arrangements.

Choosing the Right Grammar School

Now is a great time to start thinking about which grammar schools you would like your child to apply to. You can request prospectuses from schools throughout the year to help you compare and make informed decisions.
Involve your child in the process. Understanding the options available and what they’re working toward can be a powerful motivator in their preparation journey.
Remember to speak positively about your local catchment area comprehensive schools too. While grammar school may be your first choice, your child should feel confident and excited about whichever school they ultimately attend.

Understanding Catchment Areas

Catchment areas are critical in grammar school admissions, as they often determine priority for places. Schools typically give preference to children living within a defined geographical boundary.
Check whether your home address falls within your chosen school’s catchment area. Some schools also allocate a percentage of places to children outside the catchment zone, which can be a good opportunity for those living further away.
Always verify this information with the schools directly or check the relevant consortium website, as catchment policies can vary and may be updated yearly

Attend Open Days

School open days are one of the best ways to gain insight into a school's environment, values and facilities. They also offer opportunities to ask specific questions about the admissions and 11+ process.
Some open days may be for parents only, while others welcome children too. If your child can’t attend a scheduled open day, consider arranging a private tour. Seeing a school in person can help your child visualise their goals and stay motivated during their exam preparation.
