The 11 plus English Comprehension section of the exam can vary across the country. However, 11 plus CEM (Centre for evaluation and monitoring) and GL Assessment often include a fiction or non fiction comprehension text followed by a series of multiple choice questions.
This section of the 11 plus exam tests a child's ability to extract information and infer meanings from a text. So, in order to really conquer English comprehension questions, children need to be reading as much as possible!
If children are presented with a fiction passage, they need to be able to locate key information and identify hidden meanings within the text using inference techniques. Questions also test understanding and interpretation of language features. Non fiction passages usually include questions which require children to locate and extract key information from a text (i.e names, dates, numbers). Children may also have to use data from different places within the source and draw conclusions.
