In this 11 plus maths tuition video Kat and Hugo get an email from John who doesn’t know how to add fractions. Hugo helps Kat by showing her how to find the common denominator between two fractions.
When adding fractions you first have to find the lowest common multiple in both of the denominator’s times tables. Whatever you do to the denominator you have to do to the numerator. Once the denominators are the same you can add the numerators together.

In algebra we use letters to represent unknown numbers. So an algebraic equation will often look something like x + y = 5. Once we are told the value for one of the letters, the equation becomes quite easy to work out.
To best replicate the conditions of your child's 11+ entrance exam you should allow your child to complete this paper within timed conditions.
In this 11+ tuition video Hugo explains the principles of ‘Substitute, Collect, Operate’ as steps to solving algebraic equations.
Factors and prime numbers are busted in this 11 + maths tuition video. Daniel has entered a maths competition and needs Hugo’s and Ben’s maths expertise to teach him about factors and prime numbers.
Factors are whole numbers that can be neatly divided into other whole numbers, for example 2 is a factor of 8 because 8 can be divided by 2 to make a whole number. All numbers can be divided by themselves and 1, but if a number can’t be divided by any other numbers then that means they are a prime number. Simple!
My son did the online year 5 tests and thought that this was better than somebody just in front of you and staring while you do the work. Doing the tests online also meant that his speed and accuracy was very good. The preparations KSOL provides us is outstanding it has mock exams before the 11+ so all the nerves my son had before the test have all now gone and when he did the test he wasn't scared at all!
My son did the year 5 online tests and I felt these were better than a tutor as it was little and often and therefore more embedded learning. As it is all done online there was no need for us to push him to do the tests every day as he loves going on computers and the instant feedback was very rewarding for him. For the last month before the 11 plus we switched to Bond papers to get him used to writing his answers. He scored well above what was required and therefore got his first choice.
